I was in line at Aldi and this girl with two toddlers in front of me had her card declined and she looked so fucking sad and said “let me call my husband real quick” and it was only 18 dollars, so I just paid for it, and she was very sweet and then as she walked off, the lady behind me said `”You know that was probably a scam, right?” and like, even if it was, like what a sad fucking scam, right? 18 dollars at the Aldi. If you’re “scamming” me for some Tyson chicken and apple juice and cauliflower, then just take my fucking money.

“A scam” people are fucking wild.

This “scam” reaction always pisses me off. Like, what do these people think? That someone wakes up and decides “I’m gonna go to the low-cost grocery store, put ONLY 18 dollars worth of food in my cart, try and check out, use a card I know will be declined, and then–what, hope the person behind me is going to pay for my groceries? But I’m not gonna ask, I’m just gonna put on a sad face and hope that they decide to take pity on me? And I will go through the embarrassment and judgement at a register even though I’m perfectly capable of paying for these groceries myself?” Like, for what purpose do they think this person decides to do this? Funsies? No. Like even if she knew she had no money, what kind of desperate do you have to be to just like…hope someone behind you is going to offer to pay for your groceries? I mean, if your “scam” is “I know I don’t have money but I need to feed my family so I’m gonna go somewhere really cheap and hope that someone will be nice enough to offer to pay when I can’t,” then you deserve compassion and understanding and all the fucking help you can get.

People are so willing to believe poor people are faking it that it literally murders their critical thinking skills I swear.
