It’s a lot harder to counteract propaganda than it is to spread it. Try seeing the insane looks you get when you tell people that prohibition in America worked. It successfully reduced overall alcohol consumption, and the apparent rise in organised crime was attributable in hindsight to other factors, such as urbanisation, not the illegality of alcohol. Its re-legalisation was driven by the desire for increased state revenue from taxes. All of this is well-supported by the evidence, but the received belief is stronger than the unexpected truth.
