“The conditions in which the women worked were of no concern to brothel owners, clients or anyone else for that matter, as most sex workers in ancient Italy were slaves. As the ancient attitude towards slaves was one of indifference at best, and violent disdain at worst, the lives of women were no source of empathy to those outside their class.

The sex workers fulfilled a utilitarian function and nothing else. Confined to the premises by (usually) male pimps who provided them with only their most basic needs, the women were essentially cut off from the outside world. This rendered them vulnerable to the whims of both pimp and client alike.”

After reading this, I can’t believe that sub-title has the gall to even ask if the life of a sex slave was glamorous or not. Shit really hasn’t changed much.

“Most ”“”“”“Sex workers”“”“”“ were slaves” why bother talking about this shit if you can’t even do it accurately or respectfully. And who tf ever thought a brothel was glamorous besides yalls dumbasses??????? Sex pozzies can rot with johns

What bothers me is when pro sex werk people try to glamorise prostitution from the past. It’s bad enough when they glamorise it in modern times but the past is much harder to pretend as if prostitutes were ‘business women’ selling their ‘wares’

I’ve seen pro sex industry fuckers call prostitutes in Victorian England/Pre Industrial Revolution ‘sex workers’ as if they weren’t destitute women with no where else to go

They have no sense of decency or honesty about the realities of prostitution

There’s an entire series on Hulu that does just that. It’s called Harlots and the women are portrayed as being in control and it’s a load of bs that I’ll never watch.
