It also overwrites the legacy of the numerous women throughout history who have had to present themselves as male simply to attain the same opportunities as men. This does not mean these women were not women; it is the reality of their femaleness and the roles and expectations assigned to them by patriarchal society because of that femaleness that forced them to disguise themselves as anything other than the women they were.
