Seems like the trans activists out in Vancouver, Canada, have succeeded in closing down the Vancouver Women’s Library.
Support the women if you can, please!
VWL’s facebook page confirms it. They don’t state the reason, but everyone in the comments knows why. This is infuriating. These women put in so much work and spent so much time organizing different events, collecting not only books but also feminist posters and publications – pieces of our history – which can so easily become lost and forgotten – and they made it all accessible, all this knowledge and history that is so often confined to academic specialists. I’m so angry. Men so desperately want women to be confined and isolated from other women, physically and intellectually. I know I shouldn’t be surprised, and really I’m not, but it’s maddening and exhausting.
Is it too late for a crowdfunding campaign? Any chance they could move their materials to a local nonprofit and continue efforts from there? Our local feminist bookstore closed down in the early 2000′s, merged with the state’s lesbian history archives, and now have everything stored in the basement of the first church in the area to perform same-sex weddings. Even without being targeted by anti-woman, pro-trafficking groups this would have been difficult to maintain for the same reasons independent bookstores and coffeeshops cannot afford to survive.
It seems that they’ll be selling off all of their materials in a book sale, which has some people understandably upset, because many/most of the books and pieces of feminist ephemera were donated to them. I definitely agree that it would be wise to move the posters and other historical items to an already-established archive, at the very least.
Good people don’t get feminist book stores closed down. Good people don’t try to silence women’s history.
Trans activists, you’re not fucking good people. You’re OPPRESSIVE.
Yeah REAL WOMEN AND REAL FEMINISTS DON’T GET FEMINISTS BOOK STORES SHUT DOWN!! YOU PEICES OF TRASH.
This is a reminder to support lesbian/feminist owned business around you, especially ones that hold historical information to the communities. Let us hope this isnt the first of many to fall. 💖
