I’ve seen nonbinary friends on fb talking about about how nonbinary identities have always existed. They’ve brought up the Filipino culture having a third gender: Bakla.
I am not close to the Filipino side of my family, and I don’t know their culture well. But I do know from doing a simple google search that Bakla is the name for homosexual men or effeminate men. They are not thought very highly of. Gay marriage isn’t even legal in the Philippines. Bakla is not a nonbinary identity or a third sex. They are just considered a third sex because they are not heterosexual or gender-conforming.
They don’t do their research lol.
Much like actual gender, other culture’s “third gender” has always been about oppression.
