It’s really weird to me when people talk about my generation being the first to grow up with gay representation in media as if it was some kind of positive. Sure, I grew up with gay characters on tv but I cannot think of one instance where we were portrayed in a positive light. All of the gay characters I remember in tv and movies were something to be mocked, lived extremely unhappy lives or died. I looked at these characters and thought “they’re like me” but it wasn’t comfort I felt, it was fear.

Not to mention even when you could find some sort of positive representation, like with real gay people publicly existing, your community made it VERY clear that they were not good people because they were gay
I remember friends mocking gay persons in media, like say Ellen, simply because she was a homosexual
The kind of damage that does to a young gay person’s self acceptance is insane
