the punks are an interesting entry into the “groups of young people politically motivated who created art in response to their anger.” mostly bc of the sex differences (men: let’s “reclaim” nazi iconography because it’s subversive but mostly just pisses off our parents who have vivid memories of ww2 and we love to make them uncomfortable and separate ourselves from them; women: let’s get fuckin angry at the men who beat and rape us and attempt to heal and support one another through our music) 

ANYWAY so let’s skip to the early days of the internet. suddenly you have….unparalleled interconnections with people across the globe and unlimited access to information. also porn (but we’ll get to that later) 

this is around the time (2005ish?) that internet celebrities like the Amazing Atheist come into notoriety on youtube, and the big trend of the time is to be a Factual and Logical Man. you’re so much smarter than the idiots who believe in fairytales. it’s like the Neckbeard Enlightenment. maybe your life sucks and you can’t get laid, but you know you’re The Smartest and Most Logical Man in your mom’s basement

we’ve got some Gamergate, which i won’t rehash. other than it’s the same dudes mentioned above but they also love video games (a way to sublimate their aggression and proclivity towards violence? hmmmm) 

men’s rights activism/MGTOW starts showing up in the early 2010s as a response to the start of commercial/mainstream liberal feminism of that time. yes, women asking for the bare minimum (”please don’t rape us!”) was enough to spark an entire anti-feminist reactionary movement. but women are the emotionally reactive, insecure, unstable sex

throughout all this, you got your 4chan and reddit troll boys. to use their terminology, these are the “beta males” whomst dedicate their free time to anime, furry porn, and gaming rather than showering. they’re socially ostracized, have few friends, can’t get laid, and feel like feminism and the meager steps towards pseudo-equality that women have achieved are the reason they’re depressed with their miserable little lives

the Trolls come to a crossroad circa 2012: far left or far right politics. you’ll be granted great levels of cultural capital in the respective online communities so it doesn’t really matter which ideas you subscribe to. either read one (1) marxist text and become a pseudo-commie who wants to redistribute women’s bodies or become SUUUUUPER edgy and go full fascist whether you actual agree with the ideology or not, because it’s ironic, right? meanwhile actual nazis slither in to these communities and you can’t tell the difference between the trolls and the real tradchads

so what are the (mostly far-right) poor wittle boys to do about not getting laid? get new fedoras? pause jacking it to hentai for .4 seconds so they can brush their teeth? nope! let’s blame women for not giving us access to their bodies. we’ll create a whole sub-community around our inability to fuck because women don’t have to get betrothed on the eve of their 18th year and can choose to sleep with men who are quieter about their desires to rape/maim them 

so now, whether you’re a tumblr communist hentai-watcher or a 4chan fascist hentai-watcher, you’re given another ticket that can boost your status AND increase your chances of getting laid (or so you think): TROONACY. you can get back at those nasty filthy women for stealing all of your opportunities, which you would’ve had if only they couldn’t vote or work or do anything other than suck your shrimp dick
